Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The manuscript and title page are to be uploaded as separate files (.doc or .docx). Figures, if included, should be embedded in the text. However, high-quality version of the figures should also be uploaded as separate files (.jpg or .png).
  • The manuscript is submitted by using the JPHE paper template (see Style guidelines)
  • The manuscript file has been anonymised (incl. the file name, the text itself, as well as the metadata).
  • Referencing of the manuscript follows APA 7th.

Author Guidelines

JPHE welcomes submissions in the following categories:

  • Research articles and review articles (peer-reviewed)
  • Responses to previously published articles in JPHE (peer-reviewed)
  • Notes from the field: presenting ongoing empirical work (not peer-reviewed); max 3000 words. Read more!
  • Book reviews (not peer-reviewed); max 3000 words
  • Interviews (not peer-reviewed); max 5000 words
  • Other

Preparing the manuscript (research articles, review articles, and response articles)

To ensure an efficient review process, authors should initially consider whether or not the manuscript fits within the scope of the journal. Please read about the scope of JPHE on the journal’s website and/or JPHE editorials. Also, note that by submitting a manuscript to JPHE, it is implied that it is not currently under consideration elsewhere, and will not be submitted for such consideration during the review process.

PLEASE NOTE that when you submit a manuscript to JPHE, along with the requested author information, JPHE will save the information in order to facilitate the review process and future contacts. Submitting a manuscript to JPHE thus implies that you consent to the submitted information being stored by JPHE. It will never be sold to or shared with outside parties.

Next, please follow the manuscript checklist below:

  1. Make sure the manuscript adheres to the formal requirements:
    • It should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words in length (including references; but excluding abstract, author bios, and acknowledgements). If under 6000 words, or over 8,000 words, an explicit justification should be added. This can be done at the submission stage when providing "Comments to the Editor".
    • The manuscript must be properly anonymised. References to the author’s own work should be omitted, formulated in impersonal terms (e.g., do not write “See my article…”. Instead, simply write “For an example, see Agnafors (2017)”), or anonymous (e.g., using ‘Author (date)’). If using ‘Author (date)’, include only ‘Author (date)’ in the reference list, and place alphabetically in the list according to the word ‘Author’. Anonymising the manuscript also includes deleting any identifying metadata.
    • The manuscript needs to have a title and an abstract of no more than 200 words. These should be included in the manuscript itself, as well as the Title page (see below). Avoid citations in the abstract if possible.
  2. Please prepare a separate title page to accompany your manuscript when submitting. It should contain the following items:
    • Full title of the manuscript
    • A copy of the abstract, no longer than 200 words
    • A maximum of five keywords
    • Complete author contact information (name, address, telephone, email, affiliation)
    • Any acknowledgements or funding information that should be inserted at the end of the accepted manuscript
    • A short biography for each contributing author (max. 100 words per author)
  3. The manuscript should follow the JPHE Style guidelines (see below).
  4. Please keep in mind that full legal responsibility for the content of the manuscript lies with the author. When submitting a manuscript to JPHE it is implied that the author has obtained the necessary rights to use material produced by others, and that the author has credited their sources in an appropriate manner.

Style guidelines

  • Please use this JPHE Paper Template when preparing your manuscript.
  • Language and spelling – JPHE currently only publishes articles in English. Authors can use any standardised version of English they want, as long it is used consistently throughout the manuscript. Otherwise, the article should be written by using as clear language as possible, avoiding unnecessarily complicated sentences and/or unnecessary jargon. It is important for the reader to understand the author’s ideas. Note that JPHE does not offer proofreading or language editing support. Both are therefore the responsibility of the authors.
  • Abbreviations should be explained when they are first mentioned.
  • JPHE uses single quotations, except in the meaning of “so-called” or with quotations that are within quotations. Quotations longer than 40 words are separated from the rest of the text with an empty line and an indentation and without quotations.
  • Italics – to be used for emphasis or foreign words. If mentioned in the manuscript, book titles and journal titles are also to be italicised. No text should be in bold or underlined.
  • Figures – Figures, graphic models, or similar should be included in the manuscript. However, they should also be submitted as separate files, using any of the common formats (figures as .jpg, .png, or .jpeg; tables as excel files).
  • Footnotes– use only when necessary. E.g., a footnote may be used to suggest further readings or to discuss possible counterarguments that are deemed potential but not obvious.
  • Referencing – JPHE’s referencing system is based on APA (7th Edition). Please see details here, for example. We strongly recommend the authors to use a reference management system (such as Zotero or Mendeley) to generate the reference list. Please note that manuscripts that do not follow APA 7th will be returned to the corresponding author to be corrected.

Submitting your manuscript

The manuscript and title page (and possible tables and figures) are to be uploaded as separate .doc or .docx files. Upon submission, the manuscript is given a unique manuscript number and undergoes an initial review to ensure that it fits JPHE’s scope and adheres to the formal requirements.

If the manuscript is deemed appropriate for the journal, two or more independent reviewers will be recruited. Their assessments will be critically analysed by the designated editor ('handling editor'), who will make a decision concerning the manuscript. The decision will be one of the following:

Accepted without changes
Accepted pending minor revisions
Accepted pending major revisions
Resubmit for review
Rejected

If revisions are required, please ensure that the manuscript is revised in line with the Style guidelines below. In the case of manuscripts for which major revisions are required, the handling editor may send the resubmitted manuscript to the original reviewers for further review before a decision is made.
